This Kabinett exhibition is dedicated to Man Ray, one of the pioneers of Modern art. Included here are drawings, paintings, photographs, objects and prints made throughout the artist’s career, beginning with the works made in New York and Ridgefield, New Jersey (1913 – 1921). A large Self-Portrait in ink, as well as an ink study made after his painting War (1914) are featured alongside a vintage print of Moving Sculpture (an image of sheets hanging in a New York City alleyway). Also shown is a painting made from the photograph Flying Dutchman, one of the very last remaining paintings from the Dada period available on the market. The Paris years (1921 – 1940) are represented primarily by photographic portraits of various colleagues (Tristan Tzara and André Breton) as well as of his model Kiki de Montparnasse, and a singular rayograph (a pioneering technique for which Man Ray is known). Select paintings, photographs and drawings from the Hollywood years (1940 – 1950) are also included along with works made during the artist’s twilight years in Paris (1950 – 1976).
