The Bathers, based on Cézanne’s painting of the same name, consists of three large figurine abstractions that appear to recline and loll in the ‘tears’ of the fourth abstracted figurine, a large aluminum and bronze water fountain. Sanné Mestrom’s sculptural practice is grounded in painting and this work extends the artist’s investigation into the language of painting as explored through sculptural form. Mestrom’s artistic innovation lies in her ability to invert significant icons of modernism into feminized and subversive forms. Throughout her broader artistic practice, she quotes key historical paintings in three-dimensional form, combining the processes of structural fabrication, bronze casting, ceramics and the use of found elements.
