House of Red Bamboo

Rossi & Rossi

House of Red Bamboo is comprised of a painted scaffolding structure divided into a grid with a cross passage through which visitors may enter and exit the artwork. Based in part on Rasheed Araeen’s seminal structure To Whom It May Concern (1996) – the first lawn installation completed for the Serpentine Gallery, London – this installation references the venerated artist’s long-standing investigations into geometric and architectural structures as post-Modernist representations of non-compositional forms. Configured using iconic lattice-rigged bamboo scaffolding, the piece draws immediate reference to the history and infrastructure of Hong Kong. Like Araeen’s earliest structures, it reflects a belief in egalitarian societies based on utopian ideologies. A work of inherent temporality, House of Red Bamboo channels public performance structures, part of the cultural fabric of Hong Kong used for Chinese opera and festival stages.
