metal beam (model IPE 120), soil
A metal beam is suspended between two walls and positioned so that its upper surface is at 157 centimeters above the floor – level with the artist’s own eyes. Two centimeters of soil from the Lampedusa immigrant center covers the surface of the beam. The silent presence of this bulky work, aptly named Orizzonte (Horizon), literally slices the space in two. This is not a horizon made of sea and sky but its diametric opposite: sky and earth. A promise, a threat, the line of the horizon is reflected daily in the eyes of thousands of illegal immigrants.
