Moving between photography, film, and sculpture, the work of Cyprien Gaillard often takes architectural monuments or landscapes that exhibit the marks of the historical to investigate the effects and origins of social change. Gaillard’s video work KOE follows a flock of exotic rose-ringed parakeets through the city of Düsseldorf, Germany. The green-feathered birds, which originate from Africa and Asia, were brought to Europe to be kept as pets and have since found an ecological niche in the urban wilderness where their population has stabilized with successful breeding. In the evenings, the parakeets gather to sleep, their most popular spot being the trees located on the luxury retail street Königsallee, a boulevard that extends through the center of Düsseldorf.
