Since the 1980s, light has been central inBrigitte Kowanz’s work. As an artistic medium, she explores light in relation to space and incombination with signs, codes, and language.Critically reflecting on the media, her workaddresses notions of visibility, perceptionand the production of meaning. In her latestpieces, her interest has turned more to thedigital revolutions of recent decades andtheir repercussions on society. New media, virtual network spaces, and post-analogouscommunication have brought forth newsocietal forms. By working with light andmirrors – along with Morse code –Kowanz generates infinite virtual spaces. In these pieces, she explores the furtherdevelopment of her own idiom under the swayof data transfer, information, the Internet, globalization, and her concern about thecollapse of the European Union.
