A long period of economic stagnation has undermined Japanese “classless middle-class society” and invented a variety of words to express more subdivided social strata. While ambiguous “middle class” consciousness still manages to maintain the outline, its unity has been threatened from the inside by a spectrum of class categories ranging from “celeb” to “refugee.”
