This pointillist portrait suggests various times are existing in paintings by selecting the subject matter, which has been continuously appropriated by various historically known Western painters including Tiziano Vecellio and Édouard Manet. It was based on Spirit of the Dead Watching (1892) by Paul Gauguin. Umetsu is lying down on the bed with mass produced Tropical tribal patterned sheets instead of culturally meaningful Tahitian tribal patterned sheets. The naked body on the bed is re- painted in a vertical composition, as it looks like standing up. The view point looks like the “spirit of the dead” in Gauguins’ is looking down Umetsu.
