As a leading figure in contemporary Korean abstract art, Suh Seung-Won sought out a new trend in Korea’s art scene in the 1960s amidst the sweeping tides of national art exhibition-centered realism and the anti-formalist movement, Informal. Having spent the university years in the aftermath and ordeal of the 4.19 revolution, he founded ‘Origin Group’ in pursuit of more hard-edged and less expressionistic abstract art and become a member of Subsequently in 1969, Suh, as a member of ‘A.G. (Korean Avant-Garde Association)’ in 1969 to establish a new aesthetic consciousness. The artist, in order to move beyond the dominant trend of Informal aesthetics, introduced geometric abstract paintings in his novel spatial interpretation, convey through the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, and forms such triangles and rectangles. As Simultaneity 67-13 (1967) is a notable output from his early career, this work presents the structure and rigorous order of his formal aesthetics.
