“We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change – and the last generation that can actually do something about it” - Jay Inslee This is the premise of the work. Titled, 'City – Fifth Investigation', the work was executed in New Delhi, the capital of India and the second most polluted major city in the world, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). For 'City – Fifth Investigation', thirty one sheets of very fine, almost translucent rice paper were placed on the roof top of a suburban building in New Delhi. They were subjected to atmospheric pollution, which settled on the exposed surface of the paper. Every day, for 31 days, one frame was removed from the group and the dust and atmospheric pollution settled on it was fixed using a fixative. So at the end of the 31 days, there are 31 frames, with each frame having one day’s dust, two day’s dust, three day’s …… 4 day’s… 5…6 …31 day’s dust and pollution fixed on it. The work will be displayed like the dates in a calendar for the month of May 2017. At a time when most cities in developing countries are reeling under pollution due to unsustainable and ecologically damaging policies and processes, this work is at once a data, a graphic and an object.
