The Narrow Gate, a major work from ‘Turning Pages in the Book of Love,’ the first exhibition by the artist Jim Hodges with Massimo De Carlo gallery, was specifically conceived and created for the historically significant Palazzo Belgioioso in Milan. The work consists of a room within a room, a crate that hosts a wooden cabinet with multiple skins of lacquer, gold and silk, which in turn houses a precious object of glass in a field of brilliant light. The fragile glass rose tree surrounded by colorful butterflies can only be seen through the crack of the wooden crate, a fleeting revelation. The Narrow Gate casts an atmosphere of light and shadows, evoking a narrative that speaks of the ephemeral – fragility, love, and loss.
