Sam Moyer has been developing her own distinctive language of abstraction since 2008. Her process has evolved from its more conceptual origins to address formal and theoretical issues regarding the construct of painting. Issues of scale and space remain critical, and Moyer is particularly interested in the way architecture functions in tandem with her objects to create dynamic visual experiences. All these concerns coalesce vividly in Moyer’s most recent paintings, large compositions of variegated and multi-hued sections of repurposed materials in a spectrum of colors. For her first solo exhibition with the gallery in late 2017, Moyer produced her most ambitious work to date: a monumental painting measuring 10 x 18 feet and comprising 30 individual elements including repurposed materials and hand-painted canvas. For Unlimited 2018, Sean Kelly presents a new work by Moyer similar in scale and materials to that painting. This impressive piece articulates on a grand scale the aesthetic and methodological concerns that inform Moyer’s approach, while acknowledging the expanded scope of her practice.
