In keeping with the chamber music character of the Kabinett, the selection of works here by Helmut Federle have a private character – most of them have never been shown before and come directly from the artist’s studio. Made in the 1980s, on paper and cardboard, they are accompanied by workbooks, poems, and photos from his personal archive, including artefacts from his private collection. Federle, a deliberate loner, lived for several years in New York in the early 1980s, creating an influential body of work and developing his own idiosyncratic vocabulary. He entitled it programmatically Arbeit der Neuen Ordnung, as reflected in the eponymous artist’s book from 1983. The particular significance of this body of work in art historical terms lies in the assured and highly personal elaboration of a distinct idiom characterized by great eccentricity and clarity. In Federle’s oeuvre, contradictions are inherent: the Constructivist traditions of Modernism infuse the abstraction with vibrant life, with moments of Concrete art and surreal approaches to form. A latent expressive quality is generated with the most spartan of artistic means. With Federle, the poetic narrative moment is essentially created through the titles: a primary act of his creative output. © Markus Wörgötter
