In 1909 Gabriele Münter bought a house in Murnau. The „Blue Country“, as she and her companions, Wassily Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej von Jawlensky had named it, became her inspiration, the mountains, lakes and moor her favourite motif. After World War I - and the separation from Kandinsky - Münter had lived in Cologne, Munich, Berlin and Murnau. After travelling, she always returned to Murnau and during World War II also found the peace and quiet she needed for painting there. In 1931, the year she created the present painting, she moved back to Murnau again for good, with her partner, the philosopher and art historian Johannes Eichner. She rediscovered her love for the landscape of upper Bavaria and created new paintings, which established her reputation as the painter of the Bavarian alpine upland until today. The shades of blue of the mountain range behind the tree, which has already changed its leaves to autumn colours, give the viewer the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Blue Country.
