British painter Jessie Makinson's visual world is comprised of a surreal daze littered with references to painting, history, sci-fi and pop culture. Often kitsch, capricious and mischievous, the works borrow and transpose certain historical concepts and convictions into the present, finding occult coordinates of a personal mythology of influence.
Referencing and wilfully misunderstanding 17th century ideas of the exotic and travel fiction such as Mary Cavendish's 'The Blazing World' and Diderot’s ‘Le Bijous Indiscreet’, it is suggested that this is no ordinary Arcadia - it is one with feminism, nature and anarchy at its core.
