Born 1970 in Tokyo, Japan Lives and works in Berlin, Germany Jonathan Meese’s work resembles a stage. Completely uninhibited, he lives it up on this stage assuming ever-new roles, with new costumes and a new dramaturgy. His work extends across installation and performance, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, writing, and stage design as well as directing theater and opera, and, with the greatest of ease, he has developed his own, unmistakable idiom in each genre. All of his works share humor that tends toward the grotesque, underpinned with a powerful, authentic creative drive toward art’s aspiration to rule the world, which Meese described in 2006 for the first time as the ‘dictatorship of art’. Jonathan Meese’s works are included in the collections of the MoMA, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Sammlung Goetz, Munich, among others.
