Born 1916 in Uljin-gun, South Korea Died 2002 in Seoul, South Korea Characterized by intense colors and the use of graphic, lyrical compositions that suggest landscapes and fragmented bodies, Yoo’s works from 1964 onwards reflect the period in which he mastered his independent style. The works collectively exhibit his most characteristic theme – the mountain motif – depicted in varying perspectives and scales. Employing a vibrant group of vocabulary that distilled Korean naturalism into basic formal elements of point, line, plane and color, Yoo has described his work as ‘art [that] embodies a purely abstract state based on nature’. In addition, important archival resources that document the artist’s time in Tokyo (1935-1943) will also be exhibited. As one of the founders of Korean abstraction and best known for his vibrant vocabularies, Yoo Youngkuk is celebrated for his seminal role in promoting Modern art in post-war Korea.
