Born 1903 in Yixing, China Died 1988 in Shanghai, China Wu Da-yu studied at the L’École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1922. After returning home, Wu and his contemporaries, revolutionized modern Chinese art. By synthesizing Western concepts with those from Chinese philosophy, poetry, calligraphy, and painting, Wu established an expansive theory which he called ‘dynamism’. His cartoons, ink, gouache, encaustic, pastels, watercolor, and drawings, reflect his exploration of styles such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Fauvism, as well as traditional Eastern composition. Wu’s paintings are not limited by representation, as his brushwork is unrestrained, his colors are bright and lyrical, and overall, his paintings are very abstract. The rich and colorful works on paper offer viewers the opportunity to experience the context and concepts of this master of his generation. Wu’s work has been the subject of many retrospective exhibitions including at the Shanghai Art Museum (1995 and 2003) and the National Museum of History in Taipei (1996).
