Emil Schumacher (1912-1999) is amongst the most important representatives of the German Informel and internationally renowned. In his work he showed a remarkable sense for material and colour. He applied paint as thick layers of material onto his carriers and drew flowing structures of rifts and trenches into them that ran through the paintings like wild rivers through earth. These structures give the paintings an eruptive strength, but also a deep vulnerability.
