Photo: Trevor Lloyd The painting by Vincent van Gogh existed in the collection of the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, an influential art gallery owned by a French Jewish family. In 1940, the family relocated around thirty Impressionist and post-Impressionist works to a château in southwestern France, anticipating Nazi targeting. In March 1944, SS forces raided the château and left with five truckloads of stolen items, leaving the château in flames. The whereabouts of the work, or if it even exists today, is unknown.
