Wagner & de Burca's work focuses on the powerful expressions of “marginal” communities in Brazil and their complex relationship with international and local traditions. In their films, the artists work collaboratively with their subjects, sharing an understanding of the complexities of modern self-representation and awareness. Grupo La Mafia (2019) is part of the Swinguerra series, commissioned for the Brazilian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, which provides a deep and empathic view of contemporary Brazilian culture at a time of significant political and social tension.
Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca live in Recife, where they’ve been working together since 2011. The duo is currently showing their work in the Brazilian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, at Pérez Art Museum (Miami) and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). Among their most recent exhibitions are: AGYU (Toronto, 2018); MOCAD (Detroit, 2017); Panorama de Arte Brasileira (São Paulo, 2017 and 2013); Skulptur Projekte (Münster, 2017); Bienal de São Paulo (2016). They have been awarded the jury’s special prize at the Berlinale Shorts (2019).
