Erika Verzutti

Erika Verzutti is equally capable of ascribing monumental weight to a small sculpture and rendering a large piece of matter sublime. Her works often combine references to everyday objects like fruits, vegetables, and eggs, with ceremonial forms, such as totems and gravestones. Verzutti’s work manages to be at once playful and display significant technical prowess, exploiting materials that range from bronze to papier machê. In wall reliefs such as Forest (2019), depressions into the work’s surface become guidelines for the application of paint, embodying the complex relationship between painting and sculpture in the artist’s practice.
Erika Verzutti lives and works in São Paulo. The Centre Pompidou in Paris has recently presented the first retrospective in Europe dedicated to her œvre. Her work was also recently included in the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), the 32nd São Paulo Biennial (2016) and showed at MASP (São Paulo, 2017); Pivô (Sao Paulo, 2016); Sculpture Center (New York, 2015) among other institutions. Verzutti’s work is included in the following collections: Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Tate Modern (London), The Guggenheim Museum (New York).
