Julião Sarmento has developed a visual discourse that explores concepts of memory, transgression, seduction and desire. For many years now, the artist's œuvre has been traversed by images of gestures and the recurring presence of a singular female character taken from that archetypal image of a woman propagated by Western culture. In the work Alma (6) (1998), color takes center stage and creates tensions and displacements on the pictorial surface. The field of color dialogues with the image, and arises as a further signifier in the interplays of language proposed by the artist.
Julião Sarmento lives and works in Lisbon. He has participated in two editions of Documenta (1987, 1982) and of the Venice Biennale (2001, 1997), in addition to recent solo shows at Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Compostela, 2018); Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian (Paris, 2016); Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (Mexico City, 2013); Museu Serralves (Porto, 2012); Tate Modern (London, 2010). His work is present in the following collections: Guggenheim (New York), Tate Modern (London), SFMOMA (San Francisco), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and CaixaForum (Barcelona), among others.
