Drawing

During the past twenty years, José Antonio Suárez Londoño has produced over 65 yearbooks containing over 5,000 drawings. Planas is his yearbook from January 1 to December 31, 2005. This large set of drawings numbered from 1 to 365 creates a visual calendar, representing an obsessive practice. This poetic and visionary diary, accompanied at times by minuscule handwritten notes, is animated by animals, intertwining figures, plants, mechanical forms, letters, numbered indices of bells and clouds, vases, maps, and dancers. It is a methodical record of what is observed or witnessed. Londoño’s yearbook presents a model of drawing as notation that is rigorous while swift, disciplined while non-contained, introspective while outward looking

José Antonio Suárez Londoño (born 1955 in Medellín, Colombia), upon finishing his studies in biology, attended the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels in Geneva from 1978 to 1984. For the artist, drawing is a daily activity that he practices meticulously in silence and solitude. His notebooks draw inspiration from an enormously wide range of literary sources to create a rich, personal inventory of the world. Londoño lives and works in Medellín, Colombia.
