Bechtler Stiftung | Guided tour

Maja Wismer, curator of the solo exhibition by German artist Andrea Büttner, guides visitors of the VIP tour through a show that explores the social dimensions of labour from multiple perspectives. At the heart of Büttner’s practice is the theme of work—physical, artistic, and conceptual—framed within art-historical and socio-political contexts.
The exhibition title “Andrea Büttner Works” references these layers: everyday labour, artistic creation, and the notion of the "work" itself, as questioned by conceptual artists like Walter De Maria. The selected pieces reflect on visibility and invisibility of labour, social hierarchies, and the economic conditions underpinning art production.
Spanning new and existing works, the show addresses themes such as precarity, value, and manual versus artistic labour. Since the early 2000s, Büttner has engaged with subjects like poverty, shame, and community, shaped by both religious and secular belief systems.
The exhibition will be on view at the Bechtler Stiftung from May 25 to September 14, 2025. Wismer, currently Head of Art after 1960 at the Kunstmuseum Basel, will assume her new role overseeing the collection and research at the Kunsthaus Zürich in July 2025.
