Trolley Party
2023
8.5 x 9 x 14 m
Recycled umbrella fabric, factory trolley, concrete

Jaffa Lam is known for her collaborative, socially-based practice. For over 20 years, she has worked with marginalized communities in Hong Kong and abroad. For Art Basel Hong Kong 2023, she activates her resourcefulness to draw upon the very fabric of Hong Kong’s history, with a new site-specific work. Trolley Party consists of a 14-meter patchwork and 6 trolley seats, made from materials discarded by the city. Working in close collaboration with traditional knowledge holders in the Hong Kong textile industry, the artist evokes thinking around labor and consumerism. By transforming the essence of these recycled materials, she creates a shelter for audiences to come together, take a seat, and exist in a moment of reprieve.

Jaffa Lam received her BFA, MFA and Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She specializes in large-scale, site-specific and mixed-media works, often making use of recycled materials such as crate wood, old furniture, abandoned metal and umbrella fabric.
