Art Basel at 50 – the 2010s

<div>The 2013 launch of Art Basel’s&nbsp;show in Hong Kong marks an important&nbsp;moment in the international artworld. The rise of Asia&nbsp;and the Asia Pacific region over the last&nbsp;decades, economically and politically,&nbsp;had been matched by an increased&nbsp;interest for the cultures of&nbsp;this diverse region.&nbsp;</div>

Launching Art Basel Hong Kong

Dedicated to large-scale sculpture and installation works by leading artists from around the world, Encounters at Art Basel in Hong Kong provides visitors with the opportunity to see works that transcend the traditional art fair stand. The sector presents these works in prominent locations throughout the exhibition halls.&nbsp;

For the first year of its partnership with Art Basel, Audemars Piguet created Curiosity, a life-size inflatable Swiss chalet, complete with log cabin construction and a thick layer of snow covering the roof, by the French artist duo Kolkoz. It is presented on an ersatz sheet of ice in front of Miami’s waterside Marine Stadium during Art Basel in Miami Beach.&nbsp;

2013

Fondation Beyeler, Art Basel, and Theater Basel stage 14 Rooms, a singular live-art exhibition adjacent to Messeplatz. Curated by Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the exhibition features performative works by renowned artists in an architectural environment conceived by Herzog &amp; de Meuron. The artists are Marina Abramović, Allora &amp; Calzadilla, Ed Atkins, John Baldessari, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Damien Hirst, Joan Jonas, Laura Lima, Bruce Nauman, Otobong Nkanga, Roman Ondák, Yoko Ono, Tino Sehgal, Santiago Sierra, Jordan Wolfson, and Xu Zhen.

2014

The BMW Art Journey is a collaboration between Art Basel and BMW, created to recognize and support emerging and mid-career artists worldwide. It offers artists an opportunity to undertake a journey of creative discovery. The recipients of the BMW Art Journey have been Samson Young, the duo Henning Fehr &amp; Philipp Rühr, Abigail Reynolds, Max Hooper Schneider, Astha Butail, Jamal Cyrus, Zac Langdon-Pole, Lu Yang, and Leelee Chan.

2015

<div>Art Basel Cities is announced. A&nbsp;multi-year initiative realized in partnership with the City of&nbsp;Buenos Aires, its aim is to develop bespoke programs and present the artworld&nbsp;with new opportunities to engage with the city's&nbsp;cultural offerings. The Argentine capital, with a rich heritage and innovative creative industries, is chosen&nbsp;as the first partner, with an initial activation centered&nbsp;on the Art Basel Cities House in November 2017.&nbsp;From September 6&nbsp;to 12, 2018, Art Basel Cities Week offers&nbsp;Argentine and international visitors&nbsp;the opportunity to discover the city’s&nbsp;cultural life through public art, special&nbsp;exhibitions, and events.&nbsp;</div>

2016

Art Basel and UBS launch The Art Market, the first of an annual series of reports that analyze the key trends in the global art market, authored by the cultural economist Dr. Clare McAndrew. The report, an independent and objective study, analyzes the global art market by looking at its different segments such as galleries, auction houses, changing patterns of global wealth and art collecting, art fairs, online sales, and the economic impact of the art market in general.

2017

<div>Building on his working methodology of self reconstruction,&nbsp;Abraham Cruzvillegas, in collaboration&nbsp;with the choreographer Bárbara Foulkes, presents&nbsp;a flying dance in the new Miami Beach Convention&nbsp;Center Grand Ballroom, an evolving installation&nbsp;combining elements of sculpture, performance,&nbsp;dance, and music realized in collaboration with&nbsp;The Kitchen, New York.</div>

2018

The new&nbsp;Meridians sector at Art Basel in Miami&nbsp;Beach is dedicated to showcasing monumental works,&nbsp;pushing the boundaries of the traditional art fair&nbsp;format. Curated by Magalí Arriola, the first participants&nbsp;include Frank Bowling, Theaster Gates, General Idea,&nbsp;Luciana Lamothe, and Ana Mendieta.

2019

As society adapts to the uncertainties and challenges brought about by Covid-19,&nbsp;Art Basel launches Online Viewing Rooms, a new digital-only platform for its galleries and collectors, with the inaugural edition going live on March 20, 2020. Online Viewing Rooms give visitors the opportunity to browse thousands of artworks presented by Art Basel participating galleries, many of which are online exclusives. The Viewing Rooms run in parallel to the three shows in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong.
