Strong conceptual positions and exceptional new galleries make for an outstanding lineup

Art Basel welcomes 16 newcomers to its 2018 edition in Basel 

Sixteen new exhibitors will join Art Basel's premier lineup of galleries for its 2018 edition in Basel, Switzerland. These additions signal Art Basel's strong commitment to emerging and mid-size galleries. Croy Nielsen, Carlos/Ishikawa, Sandy Brown, and Galerie Max Mayer are among those participating in Art Basel's show in Basel for the first time. They'll present their program alongside Art Basel's leading galleries at Messe Basel from June 14 to June 17, 2018. The show's main sector, Galleries, will be bolstered by nine new exhibitors, including 47 Canal, Kate McGarry, and Bergamin &amp; Gomide. Their presence further enhances Art Basel's most established sector, which includes 229 galleries, and has a 99% reapplication rate. Dedicated to Modern and contemporary art, the Galleries sector champions excellence in media ranging from museum-quality painting to pioneering digital art.Works by the 2017 Turner Prize-winner Lubaina Himid at Hollybush Gardens will be among the highlights of the show's Feature sector, which gathers 32 curated presentations of historical and contemporary artists. Richard Saltoun will debut in Basel with a booth dedicated to the trailblazing conceptual artist Helen Chadwick. Feature will also include a rare display of bookshelf sculptures by Rachel Whiteread. Presented by Galleria Lorcan O'Neill, it will coincide with the artist's major retrospective at the Belvedere 21 Museum in Vienna. Ten new galleries will be joining the Statements sector, which features 18 solo projects by emerging artists. Responding to the current climate, many of them have adopted an openly political approach. At Mor Charpentier, Lawrence Abu Hamdan will present the video installation The Shouting Valley, a moving portrayal of separated families shouting across the Israeli-Syrian border to communicate. Doreen Garner at JTT will shed a stark light on Dr. J. Marion Sims' surgical experiments on enslaved black women. Further must-sees include sculptures by Rathin Barman inspired by Kolkata migrants at Experimenter, and an immersive installation splicing Queer culture and Mexican folklore by Ektor Garcia at Mary Mary.
