Wong Ping’s gritty tales of Hong Kong’s underbelly shine in Technicolor
His animation work is ‘like a sushi roll,’ says gallerist Lorraine Malingue, ‘it’s a combination of multiple things that explodes in your mouth’
Wong Ping’s faux-naif, candy-colored animations have taken the artworld by storm. Simultaneously unsettling and laugh-out-loud funny, they present an absurdist version of Hong Kong’s urban life beset by isolation, frustration, and simmering desires. Wong shared the thinking process behind his practice while on a tour of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in Sha Tin, Hong Kong.
