Bolstered by many emerging voices, the show's main sector has never looked stronger

Ten newcomers to Art Basel Miami Beach, from New York trendsetters to Tokyo heavyweights

The Art Basel Miami Beach exhibitor list is out! Two hundred and sixty-nine galleries will participate in this year’s edition, 203 of them in the show's central Galleries sector. We home in on some of those who are joining the fair for the first time, returning after a break, or graduating from a smaller sector. Karma, New York City It’s a premiere of sorts for Karma, making its&nbsp;Art Basel debut in Miami Beach. Established in 2011, the gallery has a desirable roster that includes&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/11309/Alex-Da-Corte" target="_blank">Alex Da Corte</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/11138/Nicolas-Party" target="_blank">Nicolas Party</a>, two of today’s most-talked-about rising stars. Offbeat figures such as the conceptual painter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8053/Ann-Craven" target="_blank">Ann Craven</a> and Surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie also speak to the cutting-edge taste of this East Village mainstay. In addition, Karma runs a bookstore to promote its publishing activities, which are an inherent part of its identity. ‘I really enjoy working with a mix of emerging, mid-career, and historic positions,’ says Karma’s founder, Brendan Dugan. ‘That’s the great thing about having a gallery – you discover these artists you find really interesting and then have the opportunity to introduce their work to a larger audience.’&nbsp; Clearing, Brussels and New York City Ever since its inception eight years ago,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/2249/Clearing" target="_blank">Clearing</a>&nbsp;has been a go-to destination to discover exciting new talents, whether in New York or Brussels.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/20844/Marguerite-Humeau" target="_blank">Marguerite Humeau</a>’s dystopian creatures,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/16053/Korakrit-Arunanondchai" target="_blank">Korakrit Arunanondchai</a>’s post-apocalyptic musings, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7729/Harold-Ancart" target="_blank">Harold Ancart</a>’s incisive paintings have all been shown by this radically forward-looking gallery. Clearing also works with the estates of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/20867/Bruno-Gironcoli" target="_blank">Bruno Gironcoli</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/20905/Eduardo-Paolozzi" target="_blank">Eduardo Paolozzi</a>, whose oeuvres are characterized by similarly fierce and independent visions. A speculative and sometimes absurdist approach to reality – as well as a penchant for eccentricity and wit – are attributes many of Clearing’s artists share.&nbsp; Taka Ishii, Tokyo and Hong Kong Arguably one of Asia’s most respected gallerists,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1448/Taka-Ishii-Gallery" target="_blank">Taka Ishii</a> returns to Miami Beach after a seven-year hiatus. While his eponymous gallery represents well-established artists such as photography legend&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/9393/Nobuyoshi-Araki" target="_blank">Nobuyoshi Araki</a> and market superstar&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7658/Sterling-Ruby" target="_blank">Sterling Ruby</a>, it boasts an ever-wider array of exciting mid-career voices, including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/17953/Silke-Otto-Knapp" target="_blank">Silke Otto-Knapp</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/10093/Sanya-Kantarovsky" target="_blank">Sanya Kantarovsky</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7258/Helen-Mirra" target="_blank">Helen Mirra</a>, and the increasingly sought-after&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/6903/Tomoo-Gokita" target="_blank">Tomoo Gokita</a>. Introducing Japanese artists to a Western audience –&nbsp;and indeed, Western art to a Japanese audience –&nbsp;have always been priorities for Ishii, as the gallery’s upcoming presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach shows. Alongside pieces by Kantarovsky and Gokita, the booth will showcase ceramics by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/23055/Kentaro-Kawabata" target="_blank">Kentaro Kawabata</a> and Kazuhito Kawai, as well as works by Modern painter&nbsp;<a href="http://Zenzaburo Kojima" target="_blank">Zenzaburo Kojima</a>, ‘who hasn’t shown outside Japan and whose works are inspired by Japanese culture, but are based on French Fauvism,’ explains Ishii.

Gaga Fine Arts, Mexico City and Los Angeles Humor is not always easy to find in the artworld.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/2323/Gaga" target="_blank">Gaga</a>, however, has successfully made it one of its program’s cornerstones. The gallery works with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/19662/Anna-Uddenberg" target="_blank">Anna Uddenberg</a>,&nbsp;Juan José Gurrola, Julien Ceccaldi,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/17132/Marc-Camille-Chaimowicz" target="_blank">Marc Camille Chaimowicz</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/10416/Cosima-von-Bonin" target="_blank">Cosima von Bonin</a>, among others. All these artists have made a name for themselves as unabashed supporters of camp, ridicule, or the abject, and are responsible for works as spunky as they are memorable. ‘We’re interested in collaborative practices and artists who question their own role by trying to see it from a distance,’ says Gaga’s director Gabriela Magaña. This focus, as well as the gallery’s presence in both Mexico and the US, have given Gaga a unique position in the contemporary art landscape. High Art, Paris Established only six years ago,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/2244/High-Art" target="_blank">High Art</a> combines a quintessentially Parisian venue with an international program. ‘The gallery has always been interested in practices exploring the ever-evolving relationship between humanity, nature, and technological forms of production and reproduction,’ says High Art’s cofounder Philippe Joppin. The gallery’s shows by the likes of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/19991/Max-Hooper-Schneider" target="_blank">Max Hooper Schneider</a>, Valerie Keane, Cooper Jacoby, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/21999/Olga-Balema" target="_blank">Olga Balema</a> corroborate his analysis. Hyper-contemporary preoccupations – identity, technology, ecology, privacy – are actively explored in High Art’s luminous 19th-century space. Joppin adds that the program ‘embodies the complexity of contemporary networks, constantly interconnecting and changing,’ a fluidity that’s very much in tune with the zeitgeist as well.


	 Catriona Jeffries, Vancouver A leading voice in the Canadian artworld,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1514/Catriona-Jeffries" target="_blank">Catriona Jeffries</a> returns to Art Basel’s American edition after an eight-year absence. Its namesake founder started the gallery in 1994 and successfully turned its off-the-beaten-art-track location into an asset, nourishing a network of creative minds that have grown from local to global. The gallery represents cerebral, critically acclaimed artists who are regulars on the institutional circuit, from the Venice Biennale to prestigious US museums and edgy European spaces, and names on its roster include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/6972/Geoffrey-Farmer" target="_blank">Geoffrey Farmer</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/11509/Liz-Magor" target="_blank">Liz Magor</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/17129/Rochelle-Goldberg" target="_blank">Rochelle Goldberg</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/10096/Duane-Linklater" target="_blank">Duane Linklater</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/16914/Brian-Jungen?blLocaleCode=en" target="_blank">Brian Jungen</a>. Jeffries also recently inaugurated a new, generously sized space in an industrial area of Vancouver – ideal for the ambitious works she often shows.

	Galeria Jaqueline Martins and Luciana Brito Galeria, São Paulo For the first time in Art Basel Miami Beach’s history, two galleries will co-present a booth in the show's main sector. This bold statement comes from the Brazilians&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1190/Luciana-Brito-Galeria" target="_blank">Luciana Brito</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/4051/Galeria-Jaqueline-Martins" target="_blank">Jaqueline Martins</a>, who run their namesake spaces in São Paulo. Founded in 1997 and 2011 respectively, these galleries promote practices rooted in a challenging yet poetic understanding of art, and shed light on historic Brazilian voices closely linked to the country’s cultural and political legacies. These include the master of geometric illusions&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/6924/Lydia-Okumura" target="_blank">Lydia Okumura</a> and Xerox-art trailblazer Hudinilson Jr. at Martins, and concrete-art luminaries&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/43213/Augusto-de-Campos" target="_blank">Augusto de Campos</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/10661/Waldemar-Cordeiro" target="_blank">Waldemar Cordeiro</a> at Brito. Neither gallery has limited itself to Brazil, though: both also represent many young contemporary artists hailing from places ranging from China to the Czech Republic.&nbsp; Roberts Projects, Los Angeles Located in a classic Angeleno space close to Venice Boulevard, with palm trees flanking its austere lines,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1258/Roberts-Projects" target="_blank">Roberts Projects</a> represents an inspiring group of artists. Among them are the portraitists Amoako Boafo and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/11609/Kehinde-Wiley" target="_blank">Kehinde Wiley</a> (who famously painted Barack Obama), the Native American artist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/22275/Jeffrey-Gibson" target="_blank">Jeffrey Gibson</a>, the documentarian of Californian counterculture (and Skateboard Hall of Fame inductee)&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8739/Ed-Templeton" target="_blank">Ed Templeton</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/27468/Betye-Saar" target="_blank">Betye Saar</a>, one of the Black Arts movement’s most prominent exponents. Since the gallery’s opening in 1999, questions around the (re)definition of identity and its challenges have played out in its engaging program. Revolver Galería, Lima and Buenos Aires Founded by artist Giancarlo Scaglia in 2008 in Lima,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1257/Revolver-Galer%C3%ADa" target="_blank">Revolver</a> championed Peruvian contemporary culture years before the current hype materialized. Like Catriona Jeffries, the gallery has been committed to local artists and helping them to establish an international presence –&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8545/Ishmael-Randall-Weeks" target="_blank">Ishmael Randall Weeks</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8544/Jose-Carlos-Martinat" target="_blank">Jose Carlos Martinat</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/14001/Elena-Damiani" target="_blank">Elena Damiani</a>, and Matías Duville being good examples. Revolver opened a Buenos Aires space in 2017, confirming its deep-seated commitment to Latin America: The continent’s natural, cultural, and spiritual histories are central to the gallery’s program, and will be highlighted in its presentation in Miami Beach.
