Press Statement
Running from October 28 to October 31, 'OVR:20c' featured 100 leading galleries from 23 countries and territories. Dedicated exclusively to the 20th century, the presentations offered audiences a unique overview of the movements, moments, and artists that marked the century.
A wide range of virtual tours and events hosted by Art Basel and the participating galleries accompanied this edition, including Martos Gallery’s special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary 'Come Unto Me, the Faces of Tyree Guyton', which tells the early story of the Detroit-based artist’s struggles to create art; a virtual walk-through by Jeffrey Sturges, Director of Exhibitions of The Estate of Tom Wesselmann, about the work 'Study for Mixed Bouquet' presented by Almine Rech; a live interview with Daniel Buren hosted by Galleria Continua; a special artist talk with Chrysanne Stathacos on gender, spirituality, and working through the AIDS pandemic, presented by Cooper Cole; and a virtual walk-through of Silverlens’ presentation led by the gallery’s co-director Isa Lorenzo and artist Pacita Abad. A livestream of performances of Noa Eshkol’s movement compositions from her former home and studio in Holon, Israel, complemented neugerriemschneider's presentation by the late artist. Additionally, Art Basel's global VIP Representatives network offered our international audience nearly 30 exclusive walk-throughs over the course of the four days of ‘OVR:20c’.
Art Basel continues to explore ways to further develop its digital platform to support its galleries and create new opportunities during these challenging times. ‘OVR:20c’ was the second iteration of Art Basel’s new Online Viewing Rooms concept, with a more focused theme, timing and scope. This new format allowed galleries to showcase more tightly curated presentations and forge deeper ties with Art Basel’s global network of patrons and collectors.
Returning to the original format of Art Basel's Online Viewing Rooms, more closely paralleling the concept and format of its physical fairs, ‘OVR: Miami Beach’ will feature galleries that were accepted to the 2020 edition of the Miami Beach show, with VIP preview days from December 2 to December 4 and public days running from December 4 to December 6. ‘OVR: Miami Beach’ will comprise of five sectors: Galleries, featuring leading galleries presenting works by artists ranging from young talents to 20th century masters; Edition, including exceptional prints and editioned works; Nova, featuring new works created in the last three years; Positions, dedicated to emerging artists; and Survey, showcasing works created before 2000. A program of online events, including talks and gallery walk-throughs, will also take place. Further details will follow in the coming weeks.
