Conversations | Artists' Influencers: Manuel Mathieu and Edwidge Danticat in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist Who influences whom? How do artistic kinships develop? Conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist, this conversation series brings together artists with individuals who have significantly influenced their artistic practice. For this edition, Montreal-based artist Manuel Mathieu meets one of his inspirations, the internationally acclaimed Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat. Manuel Mathieu, artist, Montreal Edwidge Danticat, writer, Miami Moderator: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries, London Haiti-born, Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist, Manuel Mathieu is known for his paintings, which investigate themes of historical violence, erasure, as well as Haitian visual cultures of physicality, nature, and religious symbolism. Marrying abstract and figurative sensibilities, his compositions carve out space for us to reflect on Haiti’s transformative history while inviting us to consider the different futures the act of remembering creates. Drawing from a wide-range of subjects, Manuel’s practice combines his Haitian heritage and his formal arts education, which culminated in an MFA Degree from Goldsmiths, University of London.Edwidge Danticat is the author of several books, including Breath, Eyes, Memory, Brother, I'm Dying, as well as The Art of Death, a National Books Critics Circle finalist. She is also the editor of The Butterfly’s Way: Voices from the Haitian Dyaspora in the United States, Haiti Noir, Haiti Noir 2. She has written seven books for young adults and children, as well as a travel narrative, After the Dance, A Walk Through Carnival in Jacmel, and a collection of essays, Create Dangerously. She is a 2018 Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow and a United Artist 2020 Fellow. Her most recent book, Everything Inside: Stories, is a 2020 winner of the Bocas Fiction Prize, The Story Prize, and the National Books Critics Circle Fiction Prize. She is a 2009 MacArthur Fellow. Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zurich, Switzerland) is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, Senior Advisor at LUMA Arles, and Senior Artistic Advisor at The Shed in New York. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show “World Soup” (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated more than 350 shows.&nbsp; The Art Basel Miami Beach 2021 Conversations program is curated by Art Basel and Edward Winkleman, author and private dealer.
