We are confronted with a simple image: an arm reaching from underneath a wall for a set of keys. It would be too easy to see this arm as an Other, and construct the expected readings of Otherness on top of that. But the power of Laura Lima’s work resides rather in the fact that this arm could be anyone’s. In this sense, it touches upon to the most basic forms of presence and interaction. Interpretations hover somewhere before the geopolitical or the economical – and can even inform our discussion on those, but with a healthy dose of slapstick.
