The idea of catastrophe and destruction has been a recurrent theme in the work of Monica Bonvicini. For the large-format black-and-white tempera drawings in the ongoing series "Hurricanes and Other Catastrophes" Bonvicini uses images of devastation - urban wastelands showcasing ruined homes and crumbled façades. These are destroyed houses that have succumbed the forces of the elements such as hurricanes, fires and floods. In them, emotional callousness meets social exclusion and middle-class ideals of modernity meet the isolation and the coldness of the individual.
The work alludes to hurricane Ivan, a large, long-lived hurricane that caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and United States. Ivan formed in early September, reached Category 5 strength and became the 10th most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.
