Iranian-born, Switzerland-based artist ShiranaShahbazi makes photographs in classicalart-historical genres: portraiture, still life, andlandscape. She often translates her imagesin different mediums, be it handwoven carpetsor photorealistic billboards. More recently, shehas produced architectural installations ofmultiple images hung on wallpaper, as well aslithographic prints.Alternating between abstraction andrepresentation, her vividly colored picturesare made in the crisp style of commercialstudio photography without the aid of digitaltools. To make her abstract compositions, shephotographs geometric volumes and mirroredobjects for reflection, creating a dynamicinterplay between surface and depth and asumptuous field of geometric color and pattern.Further, Shahbazi arranges her pictures insurprising combinations juxtaposing abstractwith figurative images. Her arrangementshighlight similarities from different genresand point to structural parallels betweenoutside and inside, organic and manufactured, natural and constructed, playing with theviewer’s perception.
