The works presented here highlight previously unseen wall-based can-sculptures by the British artist Paul Lee. Lee is known for using everyday objects such as soda cans, light bulbs, socks, and tambourines to evoke the familiar and explore affiliations between materials and their coded cultural and sexual meanings. He explores such coding, and gently prods its mechanisms without fully exposing and demythologizing them. His works hint at a universality and shared experiences. He once described his relationship to art to that of a hamburger: it’s not its form (circular) that makes the burger tasty. ‘There is a way of thinking [...] that organizes art history into a series of looks, and there is much more to art making than formal concerns,’ he said in an interview published in 2011 in Mousse magazine.
