Mao Xuhui’s Guishan sketch series can be dated back to 1979 and continues to evolve throughout his artistic career. One of the most memorable subjects for the artist is Guishan Nuohei Village: 200 km away from Kunming, the place retains its most pristine landscape and rustic lifestyle. Similar to the ancients of Song who searched for emotional comforts in the beauty of landscape, Mao Xuhui regards Guishan as his spiritual Utopia. In this painting, the artist took references from the traditional composition of classic Chinese landscape painting, which is radically different from his previous works of Guishan.
