The François Morellet works presented here from the late 1960s to the early 1970s highlight the concepts that most readily display the influence of Max Bill as well as the Concrete Art of Brazil (which Morellet encountered on a trip to Rio in the early 1950s). His work engages in several directions, always observing the same principles: the system, the readability, the neutrality of the execution, which he pushes to its point of perfection by using mechanical processes, the industrial ruling pen or screenprinting by superimposition.
- Serge Lemoine, Professor Emeritus at the University of La Sorbonne (excerpt)

François Morellet (born 1926 in Cholet, France) took part in the Lumino Kinetic art that had emerged in France in the 1960s. As early as 1963, he used neon in his work, advocated collective creation, demanding the abandonment of painting and easel painting to create environments, ephemeral events, and seeking out the viewer’s participation. Morellet died in May 2016 at the age of 90, in his birthplace Cholet.
