Ariana Reines and Cecilia Pavón read excerpts from Reines’s poetry collection Coeur de Lion, which was translated into Spanish by Pavón, a poet, former co-director of the exhibition space Belleza y Felicidad, and translator of several key art texts in the contemporary curriculum. After, they discussed the peculiarities of translating poetry and the complexities and joys of cultural transactions.

The award-winning poet, playwright, performing artist, and translator Ariana Reines delivered a slide talk looking at her performances, exhibitions, and public projects for various international museums between 2012 and 2016, which she describes as ‘poetry by increasingly other means.’ Based in New York, Reines is the author of several books, most recently Telephone (2018), and her poetry, essays, and interviews have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, Bomb, Granta, Harpers, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and more. She has taught at Columbia University, the European Graduate School, New York University, Tufts, Naropa, The New School, and Yale, among others.

This lecture examining the contradictions of contemporary exhibition making – including the risks of a flattened identification of art and politics – was delivered by Juliane Rebentisch, a professor of philosophy and aesthetics at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main, Germany, where she has also served as vice president since 2014. From 2015 to 2018 she was president of the German Society for Aesthetics, and she is a member of the Research Council of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research.

Art Basel Cities | Artist Talk & Artistic Action: David Horvitz

American artist David Horvitz initiated this talk with a mass participatory action in homage to French artist Marcel Duchamp, in which 200 balloons were released in the sky, each attached to a mile-long string. Following the performance, Horvitz discussed his affinity for Duchamp and his inspirations for this work, titled Señalamiento del cielo (Signaling the Sky) (2018), conceived specifically for ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’. At the Museo de la Cárcova, he guided the audience through his site-specific ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’ installation Free Time (Tiempo libre) (2018) and activated links between his original works and the museum’s collection of copies from the past. For ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’, artist Gabriel Chaile has created (Retrato de Diego Núñez) / Diego (Portrait of Diego Núñez) (2018), a sculptural installation that doubles as a clay oven in which locals can prepare their food. In this talk, which began at the artwork site and ended at Fundacíon Proa, he discussed the importance of community dialog to the function of his work. Argentinian artist Eduardo Basualdo has included the Río de la Plata as a medium in his ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’ work Perspective of Absence (Perspectiva de la ausencia) (2018), which interrogates the relationships between earth and water and people and place. This talk took place at sunset, allowing the audience to discuss with the artist while enjoying the Asociación Argentina de Pesca’s unique position on the river’s shores. For this talk, Argentinian artist Luciana Lamothe used her 'Hopscotch (Rayuela)' work Starting Zone (Zona de inicio) (2018) on Plaza República Oriental del Uruguay as a stage. While walking audience members through her installation, Lamothe explained her creative process and answered questions. Creating a dialog with the surrounding landscape, the work is intended to be accessible to the broad public, with or without any art background.
