Matías Duville’s experimental landscapes feature tortured depictions of organic elements that expose discomfiting facts of geography, evolution, and industry. In Big Bang America (2019), Duville interrogates established order through expressions both symbolic and physical. In this large-scale sculpture, a rock crushes a pipe, pinning it to the ground and sending both ends into the sky. From the holes on opposite ends of the V-shaped tube emerge symbols of two distant climates: a palm tree on one end, and branches of a coniferous cypress tree on the other. The pressure exerted by the rock on the pipe is the genesis of the entire scene and an open proposition to the viewer. The extremities within the piece illustrate multiple themes of division, including plant species thrust into new ecosystems, steel crushed by stone, and linearity derailed. In this work and others, Duville challenges viewers to consider the impact of the industrial on the planet, and what happens when nature is subverted and altered by an artificial force.Big Bang America is presented by Revolver Galería.&nbsp; Special thanks to Revolver Galería, Barro, and Galería Luisa Strina.

Mutations, the passage of time, and the interplay between fiction and reality are fertile territory in Matías Duville´s drawings, sculptures, and installations. More recently, he has begun to incorporate investigations in the field of sound. Duville studied visual arts at the Escuela de Artes Visuales M.A. Malharro in Argentina, and has since participated in an international array of residencies and fellowships, including the International Artists Residency in Argentina (2005); the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, Italy (2007); the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, United States (2011); and a residency with LARA – Latin America Roaming Art in the Galapagos Islands (2016). His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries in Peru, the United States, France, Colombia, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Chile, Italy, and Spain, including the Drawing Center, New York (2013); the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (2013); the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (2013), the Museu de Arte Moderno do Rio de Janeiro (2015); the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2017); and many others.
